The Grassrivers wetlands represent the largest wilderness expanse in GTA 6. Standard boats run aground on shallow peat beds, and wheeled vehicles sink into mangrove mud. Flat-bottom fanboats (airboats) are the only true masters of Leonida's sawgrass maze.
1. Why Conventional Watercraft Fail in Grassrivers
Unlike the deep ocean waterways of Vice Beach or the Key Chobee channels, the water depth across the Grassrivers marsh ranges from only 6 inches to 3 feet. Conventional speedboats with outboard or inboard marine props instantly suffer catastrophic hull damage and propeller entanglement from dense sawgrass blades and submerged cypress knees.
Airboats bypass this entirely because their propulsion system is improved completely above the waterline. A massive caged aircraft engine powers a twin or triple-blade fan that pushes thrust through air rather than water, while dual rear rudders vector the airflow for drift-heavy steering.
2. Physics & Handling Mechanics
Handling Tip: Throttle Steering
Airboats have no underwater rudder or braking mechanism. You only steer when the engine is under throttle. Letting off the accelerator completely removes your ability to turn, causing you to glide forward in a straight slide on the hull.
In GTA 6's upgraded RAGE physics engine, airboats model authentic ground-effect sliding. You can transition smoothly from 2-foot water to wet mud flats and flattened sawgrass reeds without losing momentum. However, dry sand banks and solid ground create massive friction deceleration that can spin the craft out.

- Sawgrass Marina Boardwalk: Located on the eastern edge where Route 8 meets the wetlands. Features three civilian airboats docked next to a bait shack.
- Gator Gary's Tourist Enclosure: Roadside Florida attraction with custom yellow fanboats equipped with front floodlights for night runs.
- Southern Stilt Camp Mooring: Deep in the cypress hammocks, bootleggers keep muffled two-seater scout airboats hidden beneath camouflage nets.
4. Evading Wildlife & Swamp Predators
Grassrivers is heavily populated with aggressive bull alligators reaching up to 14 feet. While fanboat hulls are immune to gator lunges at speed, idling stationary in open water will attract territorial predators that can ram the low gunwales. Always keep minimum idle throttle when traversing known nesting grounds.
