The short answer
The wanted system is more complex now. Breaking line of sight isn't always enough if the police have a description of your vehicle or character. Switch cars, change clothes, or get out of the initial search radius before backup arrives to reliably drop your wanted level.
Got the cops on you? Here's what we know about wanted levels, how police track you, and what actually helps you get away in Leonida.
Understanding the Search Radius
Unlike older games where driving fast down a straight road was usually enough, the police in GTA 6 rely heavily on a localized search radius. When a crime is reported, units are dispatched to that specific area.
- Stay out of the circle: The mini-map will indicate the active search zone. Getting out of this zone is your first priority.
- Line of sight matters: Police cones of vision return. Hiding in alleys, behind buildings, or inside interiors is highly effective if they haven't spotted you yet.
- Vehicle descriptions: If you commit a crime in a specific car and the cops see it, that vehicle becomes hot. Changing cars without being seen breaks their tracking.
Effective Evasion Tactics
Depending on your wanted level, you'll need different strategies to lose the heat.
| Stars | Police Response | Best Evasion Method |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Star | Single patrol car investigates. | Simply drive away and hide out of sight. |
| 2 Stars | Multiple units, aggressive pursuit. | Break line of sight, switch vehicles if possible. |
| 3 Stars | Helicopter support, roadblocks. | Find underground tunnels, parking garages, or switch vehicles. |
| 4+ Stars | FIB, armored units, aggressive air support. | Off-road evasion, extreme speed, aircraft escape. |
The Vehicle Switch
The most reliable way to drop a mid-tier wanted level is the vehicle switch. Drive into an alley or an area without police presence. Get out of your current car, steal a parked one (avoiding alarms if possible), and drive away normally. The police will still be looking for your old car.
Using the Environment
Leonida's map is diverse. If you're struggling on the highway, take your car off-road into the swamps or dense forests. Standard police cruisers handle terribly off-road, giving you a massive advantage if you're in a truck or SUV.
